Hanja Word Drill: 大 – 클 대
We already covered 小 [소], so it is only natural that we cover its antonym as well. That hanja is 大 [대] and it is a rather important character to know. A lot of words incorporate this character. One such word is the official name of South Korea, so it’s best you know it. Let’s take a look.
Hanja #44: 大 – 클 대
The hanja 大 [대] is the antonym of the character 小 [소]. So it won’t surprise you when I say that this character represents ‘big’. This ‘big’ you need to see as broad as you can. Korean uses it both literally and figuratively in its vocabulary. Expect to see it pop up in a lot of vocabulary.
One important word that incorporates 大 [대] is the official name of Korea. Now that we covered this character, we know all characters necessary to write that name in hanja. The name is: 대한민국 [大韓民國] which stands for ‘The Republic of Korea’. Now you know the normal word for Korea and its official name, isn’t that neat?
