Hanja Word Drill: 金 – 쇠 금
I don’t like ending a day with a numeral hanja word drill, so let’s do another today. For this hanja word drill, though, we are going to talk about quite the auspicious hanja: 金 [금]. This character is both valuable for what it represents and what it allows you to understand. Let’s give it a look over.
Hanja #27: 金 – 쇠 금
The hanja 金 [금] represents what has inspired countless atrocities and wars in history: “Gold” and “Money”. Do not sin the hanja, nor the metal for the greed of men, however. Of course, as you can image a lot of Korean vocabulary on wealth, money and the metal gold, incorporate this auspicious hanja.
There is, however, another use for this hanja I one day want to devote an entire article about. While ordinarily the reading of 金 is [금], it can be used in another way and then you read it as [김]. You read this hanja as 김 when it is used as one of the two characters in a Korean given name, their 성씨.
If you happen to know any other word you think has this hanja, let us know in the comments.
