Purpose And Intention: -을/를 위해(서)
If you remember, there are a few limitations to -(으)려고 which means you cannot say certain things with that Korean grammar pattern. Luckily there is another Korean grammar expression that can do those things and has a similar meaning to it. That expressions is -을/를 위해(서). Let’s take a look.
In Order To -을/를 위해(서)
The pattern -을/를 위해(서) might look complicated, but it really isn’t. All in all it has a very similar meaning as the one -(으)려고 has. You use this Korean grammar expression to indicate that you are doing something for the sake of something; in order to accomplish something. That what you want to accomplish is expressed in the first clause. You can translate this pattern with “for the sake of” or “(in order) to”. Let’s look at an example:
Example: 새 집을 위해서 열심히 일하고 돈을 많이 모으고 있어요.
Translation: I’m working hard and saving a lot of money for my new house.
How To Use
The workings of -을/를 위해(서) isn’t overly complex either. To kick things off, we’ll go over its conjugation rules as per our usual order of these things. The expression -을/를 위해(서) has two distinct situations you need to keep in mind. On the one hand you can use it it with just nouns, but on the other hand you can use verbs. The conjugation differs slightly depending. It goes as follows:
- Nouns: You attach -를 위해(서) if the noun ends in a vowel, otherwise you attach -을 위해(서) (like the object particle -을/를).
- Verbs: Conjugate the verb into its noun form using -기, which is then followed by 위해(서), forming -기 위해(서).
Because of its conjugation rules, you won’t have any issues with irregular verbs.
Furthermore you can write the part 위해(서) as either 위해서 or 위해. You can simply omit its 서 syllable without changing anything to the nuance.
Also you cannot use this simply with an adjective. If you want to use this pattern with an adjective, you will have to transform it into an action verb using the pattern -어/아지다.
Lastly, as you may recall I said this pattern can do the things -(으)려고 cannot do. You can use the pattern -을/를 위해(서) with verb endings such as -아/어야 하다/되다, -(으)ㅂ시다, -(으)세요 and -(으)ㄹ까요. As you may recall -(으)려고 cannot do this.
